UV & Ozone Degradation
Standard PVC insulation degrades rapidly under sustained UV exposure, cracking, embrittling, and eventually failing. Outdoor renewable energy installations require UV-stabilised PVC, XLPE, or rubber compounds rated for direct sun exposure over a 20+ year service life.
Temperature Extremes
Rooftop solar installations reach 80°C+ at conductor surface temperature in direct sun. Ground-mounted systems in cold climates must remain flexible at -40°C. Insulation and jacketing must perform across this full range without cracking or derating.
Moisture & Ingress
Outdoor assemblies face rain, condensation, and standing water. Connector ingress protection and cable entry sealing are critical; a single moisture path into a junction box or combiner is an arc fault risk. IP67 and IP68 sealed assemblies are the standard, not the exception.
High-Voltage DC Systems
Utility-scale solar systems operate at 1000V DC or higher. DC arc faults don't self-extinguish the way AC faults do. Insulation ratings, connector voltage class, and conductor sizing must be specified correctly for the system voltage. Approximation is not acceptable.
